Battery charges against a minor in florida, what is the law?

My son was involved in an incident that happened 3 months ago. His buddy and another friend, beat up a fellow student in front of his ex-girlfriend's house. My son, now 17, claims he was in the car with the girl and did not throw a punch. He and the others fled after the beating. My son is now being charged with battery. What are the consequences of his act or inaction.? Please advise
