Is there any logical reason why the Palestinians refugees cannot return to their homeland in Palestine?

as this seems to be a major sticking point in any future peace talks. These people must have the right to return if they so wish . They were expelled or fled in fear of their lives as far back as 1947. Many may now have died or found safety where they are but what about the rest ? Do they have their rights even under humanitarian grounds.?
